About Us

Since 1864, the UCSF School of Medicine and Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) have worked in close collaboration to provide health care services for the people of San Francisco, under the umbrella of the San Francisco Department of Public Health. The Department of Medicine maintains a significant presence at ZSFG, a general acute care hospital and the only Trauma 1 center in the city. Approximately 152 faculty members and 450 staff reside at the General.

The Department's mission here is bold and noble: We strive to ensure that all patients have access to and receive the best care possible, while integrating UCSF education and research with ZSFG clinical programs. To that end, we provide quality and culturally appropriate healthcare services to vulnerable populations, including the uninsured, homeless, children, elderly, low income, and racial and ethnic minorities. We also maintain a thriving research program and a national-renowned academic program.
