Patients and community are at the center of everything we do in the ZSFG Department of Medicine. This issue features two studies that incorporate community members who provide expert guidance to the work we do. They shape our research efforts to be more patient-centered and impactful, thereby transforming health care delivery, health, and well being.
This has been a tumultuous year for our federally funded research faculty, particularly those of us working in research areas newly under-appreciated or undervalued and those whose work has a funded component outside the United States. Nevertheless, our faculty have shown inspiring resilience, leaning into both our shared values and strength in community, and finding a way forward. This issue highlights three of their stories.
From September 15 to October 15, we celebrate Latinx Heritage Month. We are fortunate to have many Latinx faculty, staff, and trainees at ZSFG who bring their diverse gifts, cultural strengths, and deep commitment to our missions of clinical care, education, and research. We are proud to highlight the work of a few Latinx members in our community.
Each year, our departments celebrates exceptional staff members who exemplify Excellence in Patient Care, Research, Administration, and Leadership. This year, we honor seven outstanding individuals whose contributions have transformed our ability to serve our community. We recognized their contributions at our Department of Medicine Staff Appreciation Celebration in Pride Hall on September 16.
August is National Wellness Month, a time to reflect on work satisfaction as well as our overall joy and well-being. It encourages us to holistically examine all dimensions of our wellness including career, spiritual, emotional, physical, social, environmental, and financial, and to engage in self-care, healthy habits, and human connection. In this newsletter, we describe our efforts to augment well-being for our faculty and staff in the Department of Medicine at ZSFG.
This month, we welcome our new chief residents who just completed their internal medicine residencies at UCSF. These exceptional young physicians will help educate, guide, and support, the 180 interns and residents who rotate through the Department of Medicine at ZSFG this academic year. They bring a wealth of talent to their new leadership roles, including experience caring for underserved patient populations and a deep commitment to medical education.
There are many exciting advances in cancer therapies, but these are most effective when cancer is diagnosed as early as possible. This issue highlights faculty and staff who are spearheading improvements in cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment though multi-disciplinary engagement and impressive collaboration.
The Department of Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General recognizes and celebrates our talented, innovative, and dedicated members through the 2025 Medicine Service Awards. With nominations informed by peers, these awards acknowledge accomplishments in many dimensions and importantly express gratitude for faculty commitment to the department and hospital's goals.
In this issue, we feature three ZSFG Department of Medicine faculty who serve as Bridges coaches, training and mentoring medical students on their journey to becoming doctors.
For Women's History Month, we are highlighting three outstanding leaders in the ZSFG Department of Medicine. They bring passion, a wealth of talent, and clear visions for the future to their new roles.
