November is Native American month. We take this time to applaud the work that our faculty and staff are doing and their insights, that help us meet Native Americans where they are in their lives, their circumstances, and their spaces.
On September 30, 2024, more than 150 faculty and staff members gathered at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG) Pride Hall to honor the exceptional contributions of staff within the Department of Medicine (DOM) at the annual Staff Appreciation Awards. This event recognized the dedication, hard work, and outstanding achievements of staff members who have gone above and beyond in their roles. Neil Powe, MD, Chief of Medicine at ZSFG, presented five celebrated awards, each reflecting the important ways in which staff contribute to the success and mission of ZSFG and UCSF.
Research is a core pillar of the ZSFG Department of Medicine, and there are many exciting initiatives underway to make our research community even stronger and more cohesive. Dr. Peter Hunt, ZSFG Department of Medicine Associate Chief for Research and Professor of Medicine in the Division of Experimental Medicine explains how the inhabitants of the new Pride Hall building is developing community, and how that can fuel collaboration between departments.
With great pleasure, the ZSFG Department of Medicine welcomes two new Division Chiefs: Dr. Gina Solomon for the Division of Occupational, Environmental and Climate Medicine, and Dr. Delphine Tuot for the Division of Nephrology. They bring many years of caring for vulnerable populations, a passion for education, and energetic visions for the future to their new roles.
This month we welcome our new chief residents, who just completed their internal medicine residencies at UCSF. In the next academic year, these exceptional young physicians will help educate, guide and support the 180 interns and residents who rotate through the Department of Medicine at ZSFG. This year’s chief residents are Ellena (“Leni”) Popova, MD, for ambulatory care, and Rob Short, MD, and Madison Wilson, MD, for inpatient care. Each brings diverse life experiences, a passion for caring for vulnerable populations, and a genuine love of teaching.
Main Story: The Palliative Care Service at ZSFG started in 2009 on the inpatient units as a pilot program and subsequently entered the outpatient arena in 2017. Today, it provides essential whole person care that relieves suffering and promotes wellbeing for persons with serious illness and teaches healthcare providers to integrate palliative care approaches in the daily care of people living with serious illness, regardless of medical specialty or discipline. In this issue, members of the multi-disciplinary team reflect on the work they were called to do.
Main Story: The Department of Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General celebrates our talented, innovative, and dedicated members through the 2024 ZSFG Medicine Service Awards. These awards are an opportunity to express gratitude for faculty commitment to the hospital and department’s goals. Peers, through comments, provided nominations.
Main Story: Medical education is one of our core missions. This month we highlight three clinician-educators in the ZSFG Department of Medicine who are leaders in training learners to be the next generation of outstanding physicians.
Main Story: As part of our Women’s History Month, we celebrate the leadership of three extraordinary members of our faculty. They lead patient-centered teams, provide steady and creative guidance through challenging times, and help mentor the next generation of health care professionals. They also discuss some of the particular challenges for women in academic medicine, as well as transformational ideas for ensuring that everyone can contribute their talents to our mission-based work.
