Joan Addington-White named Residency Director for the ZSFG Primary Care Internal Medicine Training Program

Dear Colleagues,

We are proud to announce that Joan Addington-White MD, a Professor of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, will be joining the UCSF Department of Medicine to serve as Residency Director for the San Francisco General Hospital Primary Care Internal Medicine Training Program.  SFPC is the pre-eminent public hospital training program in the country, whose mission is to train future leaders in clinical care, research, policy, education and systems administration to promote health and healthcare for vulnerable and underserved patient and communities. Dr. Addington-White will serve as SFPC's 5th residency director, following in the giant footsteps of some our Department's greatest educators and mentors: Drs. Rick Haber, Miriam Komaromy, Margaret Wheeler and, most recently, Sharad Jain.

Dr. Addington-White (Joanie) currently is a faculty member in the Division of General Internal Medicine in the Department of Medicine. Joanie graduated from Bowdoin College (undergraduate degree), attended the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and served as a resident in Internal Medicine at Northwestern University. She launched and currently serves as the Program Director of the Internal Medicine Primary Care Track Residency at UW and also is Associate Program Director of the Internal Medicine Categorical Residency Program. 

Joanie's foci include clinical care of the underserved, complex medical issues, HIV, and training the next generation of physicians.   An outstanding clinician, teacher and mentor, she has received numerous awards over her career, including the Department of Medicine House Staff Outpatient Teaching Award, the "Internist’s Internist Award," a Service to Profession Award, the UW Health Patient Experience Physician Champion Award, the Helen Dickie Award for Outstanding Woman Physician from the Wisconsin chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP), and has been listed for multiple years as Best Doctors in America. In 2018, she received UW Health Clinical Educator Excellence Award. A member of the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) and a Fellow in the American College of Physicians (FACP), she recently received a grant to evaluate curricula related to Incarceration and post-Incarceration Medicine, presents nationally on “medical improv” and serves as a coach for WeTALK, a training workshop for physicians on empathic communication. Joanie will begin her formal role at UCSF on October 1, 2018.

We are especially grateful to Drs. Alicia Fernandez and Leigh Kimberg and the members of the marvelous, diverse and engaged search committee that they headed up, and to Dr. Soraya Azari for doing such an outstanding job as Interim SFPC Director, and to Drs. Kate Lupton and Lisa Ochoa-Frongia for serving as SFPC's interim Associate Program Directors.
